The Dyslexic Clinic offers specialist tutoring for children formally diagnosed with dyslexia or those with a likelihood of dyslexia, as well as children experiencing difficulty with reading, spelling or writing.

The Dyslexic Clinic follows the Orton-Gillingham approach which is intended for use with individuals who have difficulty reading, spelling, and writing associated with dyslexia. The Orton-Gillingham approach always focuses on an individuals’ learning needs. As with any educational instruction, learners need to acquire an understanding of language and master the skills needed to use language elements well. Individuals with dyslexia may require additional help in understanding spoken and written language and may take longer to acquire the necessary skills for thinking about and using language.

At The Dyslexic Clinic, your child will be taught the skills to assist with decoding (the process of reading words), encoding (the process of spelling words), orthographic mapping (matching sounds to their letter representation), spelling rules, syllable division and morphology. This is achieved through multi-sensory, structured, cumulative, and repetitive lessons, beginning with basic concepts, increasing to more advanced concepts. The progression through each stage builds upon learned concepts, which allows your child to experience success with their increasing knowledge and capabilities.

The Orton-Gillingham approach, which has proven to be effective for over 80 years, is unique from other programs. Diagnostic teaching based on an individuals’ need is how all lessons are developed and how content is delivered at The Dyslexic Clinic. Explicit instruction is provided for your child through one-on-one lessons with an ‘I do’, ‘We do’, ‘You do’ support model.

Orton-Gillingham is a multi-sensory approach that utilises multiple pathways including visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic simultaneously which will assist your child to learn concepts and support their retention and retrieval of information. The Dyslexic Clinic incorporates these procedures into every lesson for neurologically sound practice.

Engaging support services for individuals with dyslexia or difficulty with reading or spelling should be seen as a long-term commitment. Since it is a brain-based difference, dyslexia cannot be cured, however evidence-based interventions, such as the approach used at The Dyslexic Clinic, can help your child to make progress and bridge the gaps in their learning.
